The Black Food Sovereignty initiative will unify and centralize People of African Descent around food justice and sovereignty work across the city through the development of short and long-term Black Food Sovereignty action research initiatives, an annual Black Food Sovereignty Symposium and the development of key recommendations for the Toronto Food Strategy and Toronto Agricultural Program.
With the support from the Confronting Anti-Black Racism (CABR) Unit of the City of Toronto the Afri-Can FoodBasket with identified co-creators aims to expand on Recommendation #8 and Action #8.1 of the Toronto Action Plan to Confront Ant-Black Racism by establishing a Black Food Sovereignty initiative. This initiative will, through a collective framework, lead key advocacy and engagement initiatives focused on addressing food issues impacting Black communities in the Greater Toronto Area.
During the initial stages of the work the Afri-Can FoodBasket will conduct a Black Food Sovereignty Asset Mapping process across the city to establish a baseline of understanding of the strengths and potentials within the broader Toronto Black food systems. This asset map will help identify Black Food Hero’s, Warriors and inform the incubator conversation.
